Section 7 of the SDS

In the SDS, SECTION 7: Handling and storage comprises:
7.1. Precautions for safe handling
7.2. Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities
7.3. Specific end use(s)

It can be helpful to discuss this section with your site’s Health and Safety professional, and/or a trained chemist. It may be possible to use existing P statements to provide advice in some of these sections.

7.1. Precautions for safe handling

Safe handling recommendations: e.g. prevent dust through using extraction system/ local exhaust ventilation; prevention of fire etc.

Handling incompatibles: e.g. do not handle or store near incompatible substances such as xxx, yyy (Brethericks Chemical Reactive Hazards is very useful).

Reducing environmental risk: e.g. avoid spills, keep away from drains, use with a spill kit nearby.

Occupational hygiene advice e.g. do not eat, drink or smoke in work areas.  Wash hands after using product and before eating, drinking or smoking.  Remove potentially contaminated clothing and protective equipment before entering eating areas.

7.2. Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Safe storage has 4 separate (voluntary) sub-headings:

  • managing risks during storage
  • controlling effects of ambient conditions
  • maintaining the integrity of the product
  • other advice

Safe storage: managing risks during storage:

Explosive atmospheres formed during storage:  e.g.Explosive atmospheres may be formed during storage (if so, list appropriate storage conditions here, e.g. store in flame-proof containers, ground container).  Or “not applicable”.

Corrosive conditions during storage: e.g. substance may for corrosive vapours, or substance may corrode container, check condition regularly and do not keep for more than xx months.  Or “not applicable”.

Flammability hazards during storage: e.g. May form flammable vapour during storage, or flammable product, store in dedicated flammables area, or similar.  Or “not applicable”.

Incompatible substances or mixtures: e.g. Incompatible with xxx, yyy (include all known incompatibilities, and any you suspect e.g. “may (also) be incompatible with..”).  Store in a segregated area, away from incompatible materials. Or “no known incompatibles”.

Evaporative conditions: e.g. keep cool, ensure lid is secure at all times, do not allow contents to evaporate.  Or “not applicable”.

Potential ignition sources, including electrical equipment: e.g. store away from ignition sources, or store in electrically safe area, or earth containers to protect against static discharge or not applicable.  Or “not applicable”.

Safe storage: controlling effects of ambient conditions:

Weather conditions: e.g. store indoors, do not store outside, keep out of rain etc.  Or “not applicable”.

Ambient pressure: e.g. store in an area where pressure is controlled.  Or “not applicable”.

Temperature: e.g. store between 5oC and 25oC, or other temperature range. Or store in temperature controlled area at x oC.  Or “Store at ambient temperature, no specific temperature requirements”.

Sunlight: e.g. store out of direct sunlight, or store in a dark place.  Or “not applicable”.

Humidity: e.g. store under humidity conditions of …. . Or “not applicable”..

Vibration:  e.g store in a quiet area away from vibrations such as vehicle movement or compressors.   Or “not applicable”.

Safe storage: maintaining the integrity of the product:

Stabilisers: e.g. Stabilisers are used in this product (give details of stabilisers and appropriate concentrations; you may also want to put in details if the user needs to test the concentration of any stabilisers and top them up).  Or Stabiliers are not used in this product, not applicable.

Antioxidants: e.g. Antioxidants are used in this product (give details of antioxidants and appropriate concentrations).  Or Antioxidants are not used in this product, not applicable.

Safe storage: other advice:

Ventilation requirements for storage:      e.g. storage area must be ventilated under positive pressure with x changes of air per hour or “No specific ventilation requirements”.

Specific designs for storage rooms or vessels (including retention walls and ventilation):

e.g. storage rooms must be bunded to retain 110% of capacity, must have ventilation of x changes of air per hour.  Or “No specific design criteria on storage areas apart from normal regulatory requirements for substances of this type”.

Quantity limits under storage conditions: e.g maximum storage amount 10 tonnes in bulk, Or Not applicable.

Suitable packaging for the substance: e.g. compatible with HDPE drums; incompatible with metal drums.

7.3. Specific end use(s)

Uses (not) registered under REACH:  list here (outline, full details not required).  This should include a list of all REACH-registered uses.  If a Chemical Safety Assessment is not required, meaning there is no Annex to the SDS, you may wish to provide information about safe use/ handling here if e.g. a specific use differs from the guidance in the rest of the SDS.
