Section 6 of the SDS

In the SDS, SECTION 6: Accidental release measures comprises:
6.1. Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures
6.2. Environmental precautions
6.3. Methods and material for containment and cleaning up
6.4. Reference to other sections

This section can also be tricky to get right, as the consequences of giving advice could be very serious.  It can be very helpful to discuss this with your Health and Safety person on site (assuming they have sufficient chemical knowledge), or a trained chemist (if you are not one yourself).

Some parts of this section may be able to use P statements, for example information on using non-sparking tools, or removing sources of ignition etc.

6.1. Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Non-emergency personnel PPE   e.g. use normal PPE for substance, see Section 8 of SDS, or gloves, mask, goggles etc required.

Emergency responders PPE  e.g. fabric “appropriate: Butylene”; “not appropriate: PVC”; or emergency breathing apparatus required (state type), etc

Controlling risks from accidental release: e.g. remove ignition sources, or provide sufficient ventilation, or control dust, or keep away from flammables etc

Emergency procedures: e.g. evacuate the danger area, or consult an expert

6.2. Environmental precautions

Keep accidental releases away from:  e.g drains, surface waters, soil and open ground, boreholes and monitoring wells or other infrastructure which may allow substance to enter groundwater.

6.3. Methods and material for containment and cleaning up

Containing a spill:  e.g. surround the spill with adsorbent materials/ “snakes”/ pillows.  Cover any nearby drain covers, grates and manholes with xxx to prevent the spill running into them.  Or cover dusts with a “cap”. 

Cleaning up a spill: e.g. neutralisation, use of absorbent materials, vacuuming, mopping, specific cleaning techniques and tools (e.g. use of non-sparking tools and equipment for flammable materials).

Other information on spill handling: eg advice on inappropriate containment or clean-up techniques, such as by indications like “never use …”.
