Section 10 of the SDS

In the SDS, SECTION 10: Stability and reactivity comprises:
10.1. Reactivity
10.2. Chemical stability
10.3. Possibility of hazardous reactions
10.4. Conditions to avoid
10.5. Incompatible materials
10.6. Hazardous decomposition products

10.1. Reactivity

Either “not applicable” or give details e.g. reacts with xxx, or family of yyyy, brief details of specific test data if available. As mentioned elsewhere, Brethericks Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards can be very helpful for substances.

10.2. Chemical stability

Either “substance not known to be unstable”; or “stable under all normal anticipated conditions ” plus details of any stabilisers used or need for chemical stability; or “substance is unstable under following conditions” and give details e.g. temp, pressure, presence of moisture or air etc.

If relevant, any significant change in physical appearance meaning it is becoming unstable (or has become unstable), or whether any change in physical appearance does not mean it is becoming unstable.

10.3. Possibility of hazardous reactions

Either “not applicable” or give details of whether reactions or polymerisation occurs, and whether excess pressure or excess heat or other hazardous conditions (eg hazardous by products) may occur.  Describe conditions under which hazardous reactions may occur. (Information may be available in Brethericks)

10.4. Conditions to avoid

Either “not applicable”, or give details such as temperature, pressure, light, shock, static discharge, vibrations or other physical stresses that might result in a hazardous situation.  Briefly describe measures to be taken to manage these risks.  Some P statements may be applicable, and can be used.

10.5. Incompatible materials

Either “no known incompatibles”, or give details of families of substances or mixtures, or specific substances (water, air, bases, acids, oxidisers) which could react to produce a hazardous situation.  Briefly describe measures to be taken to manage these risks.

10.6. Hazardous decomposition products

Either “no known hazardous decomposition products”, or give details of the materials which may be created during use, storage, spill or heating (note that combustion products should be listed in Section 5)
