Acronyms in the CLP Knowledgebase

There are a lot of acronyms used in chemical classification systems, so here are some of the main ones you may encounter in this knowledgebase:

ADR European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road
ATE Acute Toxicity Estimate.  Concept used in the classification of acute toxic hazards to human health (fatal or toxic or harmful if swallowed, in contact with skin, or if inhaled).  Harmonised classifications may also include published ATEs which are to be used in mixture classification.
CAS Chemical Abstracts Service
CHIP The Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations, UK regulations which covered the classification, labelling and packaging and supply of SDSs for chemicals for supply prior to the implementation of CLP.
CLP Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulation, a directly-acting EU regulation not transposed into UK national law.
COMAH Control of Major Accident Hazards
COSHH Control of Substances Hazardous to Health, see the HSE website at http://www.hse.gov.uk/coshh/index.htm .  A COSHH assessment is a specific assessment of these hazards in order to comply with the COSHH regulations.  There is help on the HSE website, including COSHH essentials, an online version of the risk assessment for straightforward use/ hazard combinations: http://www.hse.gov.uk/coshh/essentials/index.htm .
CMR Carcinogen, Mutagen, Reprotoxin.  These hazards are often described together rather than individually.
DNAPL Dense Non Aqueous Phase Liquid
DPD The Dangerous Preparations Directive, an EEC/EU directive which was implemented in the UK under CHIP.  Now superseded by CLP, but CHIP labels and SDSs are still valid for mixtures until 1st June 2017.
DSD The Dangerous Substances Directive, an EEC/EU directive which was implemented in the UK under CHIP. Now superseded by CLP, but CHIP labels and SDSs are still valid for mixtures until 1st June 2017.
EA Environment Agency
EC European Commission
EEC European Economic Community (precursor to the EU)
EU European Union
EUH European Union Hazard
GHS Global Harmonised Standard
HSE Health and Safety Executive
IARC International Agency for Research on Cancer
IATA  International Air Transport Association
IBC Intermediate Bulk Container, a large cube container usually stored on a pallet, or with an in-built pallet.  Either made of plastic or metal.  Sometimes known as “semi-bulks”.  Comes in 1 cubic metre, (1000 litre) size as standard, can also be larger or smaller.
IMDG International Maritime Dangerous Goods
IUPAC International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry
LNAPL Light Non Aqueous Phase Liquid
MHRA Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency
NFPA National Fire Protection Association (USA)
OSHA Occupational Safety and Health Administration (USA)
PBT Persistent, Bioaccumulative, Toxic, a a non-GHS classification found in REACH.  This is a technical designation, referring to toxic substances which can build up in plants or animals, without being excreted, and lead to health and ecosystem problems.
PIC Prior Informed Consent regulation
PSN Proper Shipping Name (used in Transport of Dangerous Goods)
REACH Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals Regulation, a directly-acting EU regulation not transposed into UK national law.
SCL Specific Concentration Limit, where a given concentration has a CLP classification different to the classification derived from the CLP algorithms.  Usually only found in Harmonised Classifications, but can theoretically be produced for other substances and could be published as part of a REACH dossier.
SDS Safety Data Sheet. Also known as the Manufacturer’s Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), especially in the USA.  Contains information on the hazardous properties of the substance to enable people using the product to carry out a good quality risk assessment (including a formal COSHH assessment, if required), and use the products as safely as possible, based on current knowledge of the product’s hazards.
S.G. Specific gravity (the density of a liquid compared to the density of water, that is a number without any units, although it can be converted to density if the temperature of the test is known).
SVHC Substance of Very High Concern, a non-GHS classification found in the REACH regulation.  This is a political, rather than a technical designation, made on the basis of long term health hazards such as carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic to reproduction properties, or long term environmental hazard.  SVHCs are all candidates for the authorisation process under REACH, but not all of them have been authorised.
TLA Three Letter Acronym (sorry, couldn’t resist the joke!)
TTE TT Environmental Ltd, knowledgebase authors
UFI Unique Formulation Identifier
UK United Kingdom
UN United Nations
UNECE United Nations Economic Commission for Europe
USA United States of America
USEPA United States Environmental Protection Agency
UVCB (substances of) Unknown Variable composition, Complex reaction products and Biological origin
vPvB very Persistent, very Bioaccumulative, a non-GHS classification found in REACH.  This is a technical designation, referring to non-toxic substances which can build up in plants or animals, without being excreted, and lead to health and ecosystem problems.  Although vPvB substances are not  classified as being toxic under CLP, but can become toxic when they build up over time.
