About classifying for EUH hazards

EUH Statements are not part of the CLP-GHS classification, but additional labelling information used in the EU.  Extra label information is permitted under GHS, so this does not breach the GHS standard.

EUH Statements can apply to both substances and mixtures.

There are four types of EUH Statement:

  • old CHIP classifications (R phrases)
  • health hazards not included in CLP-GHS (toxic by eye contact, corrosive to the respiratory tract)
  • on the basis of their hazardous components (for mixtures) or impurities (for substances)
  • for general information

EUH Statements are included as part of the labelling information for Harmonised Classifications, where the EUH Statement is harmonised, but (just like a CLP-GHS hazard), the absence of an EUH Statement from the Harmonised Classification list does not imply it is not applicable.

In theory, EUH Statements should also be included as part of the substance labelling information for REACH registered substances in the dossier, and also in notifications to the Classification and Labelling Inventory.  However, in practice, this step is sometimes missed by Lead Registrants and C&L notifiers.

It is recommended that, if you are using a published classification from the Harmonised Classifications, a REACH dossier or a C&L-notified substance, you should check whether it needs any EUH Statements applied.
